For days he had felt that the storm was flooding his shelter. It was softly smearing every corner, as if the rainwater was pouring hopelessly into a river that flowed inside and crystallised every sound, every smell and every touch of what surrounded him. He found himself enveloped in narrow streets that flowed into infinite branches, a mixture of known
cities and imagined territory; in immense impossible structures that climbed insurmountable nooks and crannies; in the clatter of train tracks on a level crossing; in the smoke of ships arriving at the harbour. And a cold wind was trapped in the empty, blurred room that had been home.
He stood still, not trying to move in a place he no longer felt belonged to him, if it ever had, and let the quiet river work, drinking from the water of that intrusive storm.
